Hustle and Bustle: An Exploratory, Multivariate Analysis of Advanced Basketball Insights
Ryan A. Mata
This research project explores the NBA’s “hustle stats” in a number of ways, beginning with an attempt to reduce the dimensionality of the data using factor analysis so that simpler comparisons can be made between groups of NBA players based on “hustle factors.” It also attempts to compare players from successful and unsuccessful teams (based on their team’s qualification for the NBA Playoffs during the 2022-2023 season) using a Hotelling’s T2 test to examine whether or not the extracted “hustle factors” differ between groups. This inquiry links the factor analysis results to the broader context of team success and playoff outcomes. Lastly, my analysis attempts to cluster observations of player-level data based on the extracted hustle factors, to see if there are any prevailing and novel groupings that arise.
